Abstract

In modern conditions, when climate change is occurring and anthropogenic pressure on agroecosystems is increasing, the problem of increasing the adaptive capacity and stability of agricultural crops is becoming more relevant. Purpose. To evaluate genotypes in accordance with their adaptability and stability in order to develop new stress-tolerant pumpkin varieties suitable for growing in the conditions of South of Ukraine. Methods. Laboratory, field measurement and calculation, comparative methods, and mathematical and statistical analysis were used. During the seedling growth period, the plants were subjected to ultraviolet irradiation (wavelength range 320–280 nm) using a UVD 150 PT2398 30W/G30 T8 (UVB-3W) ultraviolet lamp, with an exposure time of five hours. Results. The genotypes were evaluated for their adaptive capacity, stability and plasticity. The following were determined: general adaptive capacity (GAC), specific adaptive capacity (SAC), relative genotype stability (Sgi), plasticity (bi), genotype selection value (GSV) based on the traits “drought tolerance”, “heat tolerance”, “plant productivity” and “fruit quality”. Samples exhibiting a high level of adaptability were identified: sample L 67 (Yuvilei F5) was selected for its high drought tolerance (SAC = 39.1; GSV = 1.9). Altair was the best variety in high heat resistance (SAC = 4.8; GSV = 59). The sample L 61 (Winter Liquorice F5) was selected for its higher yield (12.4 kg/plant; SAC = 1.8; GSV = 5). L 72 (Jane de Paris F5) was selected for its dry soluble solids content in the fruit (SAC = 0.3; GSV = 65). The samples studied are characterised by high stability (Sgi = 10.6–13.1%), with the highest value obtained for sample L 61 (Winter Sweet F5). Sample L 67 (Yuvilei F5) was noted for its high ecological plasticity (bi = 0.1); in the other samples, bi = 0.6–3.0, which is characteristic of high-yielding varieties. Conclusions. We assessed pumpkin samples for their adaptability and selected the best genotypes with a view to developing new stress-tolerant, high-yielding varieties for the South of Ukraine.
